Weekly TD-SCDMA Update July 21-27
July 25, 2008
- Guangdong Mobile, China Mobile's subsidiary in Guangdong Province, revealed on July 23 that the second-phase TD-SCDMA network construction is slated for completion at the beginning of 2009, China Business News reported. Originally there were two scenarios for the second-phase network construction project. One is the comprehensive rollout of TD-SCDMA network in 38 major Chinese cities; the other limits the scale of network rollout to provincial capitals and a few individual cities, totaling no more than 30 cities. According to the China Business News report, the second scenario was eventually adopted for the second-phase project.

- China Mobile recently announced that it has officially invited bids for 40,000 TD-SCDMA mobile phones supporting China's own-developed CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) mobile TV standard, Sohu News reported on July 21. Results of the second-phase bid for CMMB-enabled mobile phones are expected to be released within two weeks' time, according to the same source. Several telecommunications equipment providers are expected to take part in the bid, including Coolpad, ZTE, Samsung, Dopod, and Lenovo.

In related news, Coolpad has teamed up with Innofidei, a CMMB chip maker. Their first TD-CMMB mobile phone is expected to enter mass production soon.
